The Blasphemy Challenge

Ok, so now the latest Youtube craze has been people “blaspheming” against My “Holy Spirit”. Have you seen this? Get a camera. Film yourself “blaspheming” against Me. Upload video onto Youtube. Now you’re part of the “Blasphemy Challenge” that is sweeping the nation! Kinda like what your Grandparents did with The Bop and the Twist, but with blasphemy. If you’ve yet to check this “Blasphemy Challenge” out, it is fascinating stuff.

Here’s an exact quote of something I said once… “I tell you the truth, all the sins and blasphemies of men will be forgiven them. But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin."

So, there are some people take this quote to mean “if you are a brave atheist, say you reject the Holy Spirit on film… but make sure you have thought about this because IT CAN NEVER BE TAKEN BACK!”

Which is cute and all, but that ain’t how I roll. You want to break My heart, no problem. Done. You don’t need to upload a video to do it. You did it years ago when your mom told you not to put that toy in your mouth but you did it anyway. You’ve been sinning since birth, and I’m sorry to tell you this, but just saying “I reject the Holy Spirit” is just another one of those sins. No difference. Your “blasphemy challenge” video would be just as sad to Me if you uploaded a video onto Youtube that said “I did not honor my mother and father when I was two because they told me not to put that toy in my mouth but I did”.

So, what about it being all unforgivable and stuff? All of your sins I will wash away if you ask… unless you don’t ask. If you don’t ask, you then are rejecting Me. You are rejecting the Holy Spirit. You are blaspheming against it. The only way you are getting up here is if you and I are friends. They ask at the door. Tell them you know Me. That is the only way in. That’s it. There is no other way. It is not what you did or didn’t do. It’s all about who you know. If we are friends, then you’re in… even if you’re one of the hundreds who posted some video of you trying to sound like you can’t tell I love you.

This last clip only made the cut because I'm a Firefly fan. Represent! In regards to his story, I bring life to the full. Holla!

HAHA does anyone else find the second to last video a little humorous when she says "so see you in hell"? I mean, if there is no holy being, then there is no afterlife right? and no afterlife means no hell am I correct? So the mere fact she thinks she is going to hell, connotates the belief in a higher being "sending her there" if you will. lol! no g-d=no heaven=no hell=no belief. if any of the above are believed in, the rest follow! Suscribe to a religion or not, but at least be logical about it people!

I'm a little in between faith systems at the moment, but these folks seem to really be struggling. These kinds of people are the ones that need some old fashioned love.

Ha. So if the actual text of the Bible conflicts with traditional North American Evangelical rhetoric, you choose the latter over the former? That's logical.

dearest space cadet whom i am in love with,

I'm not conflicting with what the actual text says, I'm simply explaining what it means. some people think there is a actual unforgivable sentence that, once uttered, can never be taken back and they have thus damned themselves to hell... kinda like if the Bible was like the video from The Ring.

Believe Me?

If not, then whatever you do, don't say the following sentence "I blaspheme against the Holy Spirit". This is not a dare! Be careful! AGHH!

i love you,
jesus christ

I didn't know Jesus could change the meaning of words as well (blasphemy: impious utterance or action concerning God or sacred things).

Amazing how far people will go to distort simple words to fit a complex and illogical belief.

I dunno, Jesus, I'd have to agree with space cadet on this one. Using interpretive measures, even if one was to say you used hyperbolic speech (which is true), the sentence: "And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven." would indicate that there is a difference between one and another. Just one foundational argument in this matter.

Jesus is right-on with this one (as usual). The phrase in the original language means 'to harden one's heart toward the Holy Spirit'. Remember when Jesus said, "For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks," (Matthew 12:34) and "But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man 'unclean.' (Matthew 15:18) It's not the words specifically but the intention. Just like the reverse (saying you love someone but thinking mean things about them) is bad as well. Jesus, you're so freaking logically consistent. I try to do that well. If only I could love as well as you do... I sure hope I can make you proud. Thanks for loving me anyway.

Duh, of course Jesus is right. But I love how people can read a something that was written thousands of years ago and think they're the expert on what it means. I doubt anyone making these videos has any clue what the holy spirit is.

Dear WWJB,
I get a feeling of pure and utter evil from the whole 'blasphemy challenge' thing. That those who put this thing together want to 'cure' believers from believing and even want an end to Christmas (that's a funny one, actually, because these are greedy folks... while they may not believe in God they sure as heck enjoy getting all those free goodies from people who love them during that time of year). Still, in my heart of hearts I feel this is evil harvesting the innocent souls of people who don't know any better. Jesus said 'forgive them for they know not what they do'. If ever there were a case for those words, this is it. Yet, they are consciously blaspheming, thumbing thier noses at the Holy Spirit. Many of them are hurting, most of them, as another poster put it, really need some serious love. It is unfortunate that they would take such drastic measures without even attempting to accept God and the loving Energy He is.

Another thought... How do you think Jesus would prefer conservative religious groups respond to this 'challenge'? The people behind this are based in Dallas and I think I saw Shreveport on their site somewhere. It seems they are largely trying to pick an all out war with the Bible Belt. What do you think is the best way for people who are very sensitive to this blasphemy challenge, react?

...maybe by by trying to show a little better who She really is and what She does?

Fact. Religion exists.. but a god or holy spirit/ghost does not.

When your hurt and need medical attention.. just ask god to heal you instead of going to the hospital... see which choice works.

Who would jesus do?.. probably pam anderson.

Hi! I am atheist, always have been. Unfortunately, I don't have a camera to upload my blasphemy to youtube so I'll just report it here. I deny the very existence of your ridiculous god, his supposed son and whatever the hell the holy ghost thingie is supposed to be. Booga! Booga! SO what are you going to do about it? Make empty and pathetic threats? Lawsy, Lawsy!

Hey,

I'm confused about what the holy spirit is? Can you let me know. Also Why is it that those that killed Jesus, got the nice "Forgive them they know not what they do" line while just a little blaspamy warrents eternal punishment?

Have you guys listened to Ergun Caner's (from Liberty University) concerning the Blasphemy Challenge? I think he puts it well. At least people are asking the right answers. We are not going to help anything by showing anger towards them. Even Jesus said he came to heal the sick and not the healthy.

Just saying the words does not mean your sinning. I could say I'm a power ranger but that doesn't make me one. I agree with hcjoel. If you look at the original text, it's not just the words but the condition of the heart. God is the only one who knows what is truly on a person's heart (or soul).

Ergun Caner is going on the Rational Response Squad's radio show March 2nd or 3rd to try and answer some of the questions people have about God and Christianity. I'm praying that God will give him the words to speak and even if this helps a single person learn the truth about God and Christ, than it would be a success. Please join me in prayer for this event. Turn your anger into anguish for these people.

Thank You

Its their Eternal salvation. If they want to deny christ and say he's a fairy tale character just like santa clause and the tooth fairy, then thats fine. Either way, their attempt of destroying christianity is in vain. They say those words now, but they will regret it for eternity. Remember that

Nicely said, wwjb.

Being a Christian, I confess that it ticks me off more when Christians respond by denouncing the Blasphemy challenge. I wrote about it here: http://benandjacq.ministryhome.org/files/resources/BlasphemyResponse.pdf

Hope that helps.

Thankyou WWJB for explaining this so well, i only came across this "craze" yesterday and every time i watched i felt like i had been kicked in the gut. As Red Headed Diva said, there is something purely evil behind this scheme, and it makes me feel ill thinking about it.

What we must remember is that if these people really didn't care why would they be taking the time our of thier lives to tell us about it? These are the people who need us! these are the people Jesus was talking about when he said "love one another".

I ask that any one whom reads this takes just a moment out of thier lives to pray for anyone inbolved, that they may find hope, grace, peace. that they may find Jesus and accept his love. if only one person is effected by this prayer it was worth saying it a million times over.

Thankyou xx

Looks like I am a year late on this one, a simple consequence of living overseas. I think you have handled the question fairly though I might not agree on all the details. Most Bible believing theologians agree that blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is only possible for those who have had a true knowledge of God. Hebrews 6:4-6 speaks of the impossibility of renewing to repentance those who were once enlightened, had tasted the heavenly gift, had been partakers of the Holy Spirit, had tasted the good Word of God and the powers of the age to come (cf. Hebrews 10:26-29). Most of the people making videos of themselves "denying the Holy Spirit", do not meet the qualifications listed in this passage.

Jesus' word was clearly addressed to the Pharisees who prided themselves on their knowledge of God. In contrast to atheists, the Pharisees BELIEVED in God. Most of the people taking up the "blasphemy challenge" are not legitimate candidates since they have never known the power of God and do not believe in Him. Jesus was not warning atheists.

The problem with the challenge is that at some point in the lives of those who take it, they may be convicted of their sin by the Holy Spirit and be convinced that "God is" (Hebrews 11:6), but remembering that they have made a declaration against the Holy Spirit, they may mistakenly believe that they can never be forgiven. These people have not blasphemed the Holy Spirit since they don't (didn't) even believe that He exists in contrast to the Pharisees and those in view in Hebrews 6:4-6 and 10:26-29. They have not committed the "eternal sin". The tragedy is not that unbelievers make such blasphemous declarations, but that they later believe themselves to be eternally lost, believing that they have blasphemed the Holy Spirit, when in truth the Savior is waiting and longing to forgive them. We need to be able to help people see the truth on this and lead them to Christ.
